Train Tracks

Train Tracks vs Sudoku, Nonograms and Other Logic Puzzles

Updated October 3, 2026 · 4 min read

If you like Sudoku or Nonograms, you'll probably like Train Tracks. Here's how they differ, and why it's quick to pick up.

The shared idea

All of these are pure-logic puzzles: one solution, no guessing, clues around the edge or in the grid. Train Tracks shares its edge-clue format with Nonograms and its counting logic with Sudoku.

Versus Sudoku

Sudoku is about which digit goes where. Train Tracks is about the shape of one connected line, so you reason about paths and connections rather than elimination of digits. If you find Sudoku dry, the visual route may suit you better.

Versus Nonograms

Both give counts along the edges. Nonogram clues describe runs of filled squares; Train Tracks clues give only totals, but the track has to be one continuous connected line, which adds a second kind of constraint.

How long a puzzle takes

An Easy 5×5 board is usually done in a couple of minutes, Medium in a few and Hard a little longer. That makes it a good daily habit without a long commitment.

Where to find more

Train Tracks comes from the Logic Puzzles collection, which also includes 16 other free puzzles on the web and iPhone.
